That time I submitted a query and misspelled the agent's first name

There isn’t a huge difference between Jaime and Jamie, generally speaking, but when one is the correct spelling of the agent you query, it’s a different monster all together.

I’ve got people telling me I’m making too much of this, but that feels like something your aunt tells you and pats you on the head. I’m fact, my aunt DID tell me that via Facebook, sans pat. She’s a sweetheart.

This is rattling around in my head like rusty chains. I need to keep this from being a point of anger, from becoming an insurmountable What If.

Should my book never see the light of day,What If misspelling that first name cost me? What of the placement of an “i” is all it took?

I expect that an agent is inundated by queries at any given moment. They’re facing a mountain of work, and need to sift through it quickly and effectively. The misspelling helped accelerate the process. I made the decision for her.

I need to take a lesson from this, not a bullet point of anger. I need to be vigilant, to appreciate spell check, but know it cannot prevent me from being an asshole. Like forest fires, only I can prevent that.

This has happened once. Ok, fine. It cannot happen again.

Cannot. Must not. Will not.

The Old Post-College Try

Like, a way, way post college try, but better late than never, yes?

Mrs Crabby has been fair-but-firm in keeping at me to submit query letters to get an agent or publisher for my completed manuscript. Fingers crossed.

It’s kind of a weird process. After I wrote a bunch of words, I am tasked with writing words about the words I wrote, but only after some more words asking someone to read the words about the words about the words.

I’m sure I’ve made it painfully clear that I deserve a book deal.

I can’t imagine I’m the first to find the process of distilling 100k+ words down to approximately 150 for the query letter, followed by 1000 words for the synopsis to be challenging. With any luck, I’ll get to make a habit of being faced with that challenge.

If I could finance a daily coffee from royalties, I’d chalk it up to a win. Hell, if I get a bad review, I’d chalk it up as a win.

Dreaming big, darlings.

I don’t think she really understands what she said. One of those “I’m saying something I’m pretty sure is bad for the sake of saying something bad” moments. The snotty smirk tipped her hand.
